網站描述:
On the lower slopes of an escarpment that forms part of the divide between Mississippi and Atlantic watersheds, Eastern Divide Natural Area Preserve protects 34-acres of maturing dry and dry mesic calcareous forests. Beneath these forests lie karst ecosystems which provide habitat for the state threatened Ellett Valley Millipede (Pseudotremia cavernarum). The entire global range for this rare Virginia endemic is approximately 10 square miles of karst terrain along the Eastern Continental Divide between Blacksburg and the upper reaches of the North Fork of the Roanoke River. Another imperiled species, the Ellett Valley Cave Beetle (Pseudanophthalmus pusio), also occurs within the preserve.
In addition to protecting rare species, this preserve supports regional core forest integrity and flooding resilience. Intermittent streams drain from the preserve into a short section of the North Fork of the Roanoke River which has been designated as threatened and endangered species waters due to the presence of the state endangered Roanoke Logperch (Percina rex). To ensure the protection of rare species, as well as core forest functions, stewardship actions such as invasive species management are important.
Funding from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation supported purchase of this property, with the first acreage protected in 2025.
